What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is also known as a chiropractic manipulation or spinal manipulation.

The aim of chiropractic treatment is to correct spinal misalignment’s/locked spinal joints also known as subluxations.

A chiropractic adjustment is when a chiropractor contacts a misaligned vertebra and applies a manual force to the locked joint. This helps correct the spinal misalignment and returns the joint segment to a normal movement pattern, restoring functionality.

Chiropractic adjustments help treat, back pain, neck pain and headaches. Chiropractic not only aids in the relief of pain in the back but also in extremity joints.

Benefits of a chiropractic adjustment

  • Reduces spinal misalignment’s
  • Restores correct movement patterns
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves range of motion

Different types of chiropractic adjustments

  1. High velocity low amplitude thrust

This is the
most common chiropractic adjustment, also known as a spinal manipulation. Your
body is positioned in a certain way and your chiropractor will apply a sudden
thrust to the locked spinal joint. This adjustment normally results in an audible
“crack”, returning movement back into the previously locked joint.

Force of the manipulation is modified according to the condition and size of the patient.

2. Low force or gentle chiropractic technique

This chiropractic adjustment is also called a spinal mobilization. Some conditions, such as osteoporosis, require a gentler approach. This technique does not involve a forceful thrust but rather gentle movements of the joint segments to restore movement.

Sometimes
chiropractors will use an activator, which is a small metal tool that applies a
force to the locked spinal segment.

What is the “crack” you hear after an adjustment?

The audible pop that you hear following
an adjustment is the release of gasses from the joint. Gas released is a
combination of oxygen,
nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
